Water Management for Yield Induction

The Science of “Stress Induction”: Forcing Flowers

In nature, a plant’s ultimate goal is to reproduce by forming seeds and fruits. When a Pixie tree experiences a mild, controlled dry spell, its natural instincts kick in. It senses a threat from the dry weather and prepares to reproduce rapidly. The tree stops growing new leaves and instead converts its energy into forming thousands of flower buds.

 The Stress Induction Cycle:

To achieve the highly profitable off-season harvest in September–November, you must artificially create this dry spell during the months of June and July. You completely turn off your irrigation lines for a period of 4 to 6 weeks.

During this stressing period, the trees will stop growing and the leaves will begin to look slightly dull. This is exactly what you want. Inside the branches, the tree is busy preparing flower buds.

Re-watering: The Blosson Explosion

Once the 4 to 6 weeks of water stress are up – or when you notice the leaves starting to curl slightly in the morning – it is time to break the stress. You do this by flooding the orchard with water aggressively. Deliver a heavy volume of water to each tree basin immediately, and maintain a steady, high watering schedule over the following days.

Within 7 to 14 days of this massive re-watering, your orchard will transform. The trees will burst into a uniform, spectacular blanket of white, highly fragrant blossoms. Because all your trees flower at the exact same time, your eventual fruit harvest will be uniform, high-volume, and perfectly timed for the premium market window.

Managing Water During Flower and Fruit Set

Once the white flowers appear, you must manage your water with extreme care. This is a delicate period.

  • Never Over-water During Flowering: If you water excessively while the flowers are wide open, the tree will experience a sudden surge of sap, causing it to drop its flowers prematurely (flower drop). Maintain a steady, moderate soil moisture level.

  • Consistent Water During Fruit Expansion: Once the flowers fade and tiny, pea-sized green fruits appear, turn up your water supply consistently. If the soil undergoes wild swings between bone-dry and soaking wet during fruit growth, the expanding fruits will experience shock. Their internal flesh will swell faster than their outer skin, causing the fruits to literally pop open and split on the tree, rendering them worthless.

Monitoring Soil Moisture with the “Ball Test”

You do not need expensive electronic sensors to check if your soil is dry or wet enough. Use this reliable, zero-cost farm method:

 

  1. Dig Down: Clear away any mulch and dig a small hole about 15 cm deep under the edge of the tree’s branch canopy.

  2. Squeeze a Handful: Scoop up a handful of soil from that depth and squeeze it firmly in your fist.

  3. Read the Results:

    • Too Dry: If the soil feels dusty and falls apart completely when you open your hand, your trees are starving for water.

    • Perfect Balance: If the soil forms a solid ball that stays together but doesn’t squeeze out muddy water, your irrigation level is ideal.

    • Too Wet: If water squeezes out between your fingers, you are over-watering and risking root rot. Turn off your taps immediately.
