Land Preparation and Soil Amendments

Clearing and Subsoiling: Breaking the Hardpan

Start by clearing all heavy bushes, stumps, and deep-rooted weeds (like Couch grass) from the designated area. Stumps left behind can rot and attract destructive termites that will later attack your young citrus trees.

If your land has been used for intensive cattle grazing or continuous shallow maize plowing for many years, it likely has a compressed layer of hard earth just below the surface, known as a hardpan. Standard tractor plowing only stirs up the top 15 cm of soil. To give your Pixie roots room to dive deep, it is highly recommended to do subsoiling (using a long tractor chisel to break the deep hard layers) or deeply loosen the soil manually using heavy hand tools. This allows water to sink in deeply and encourages deep root development.

Digging the Standard Planting Hole

Your planting holes should be large and spacious. Do not dig a small, tight hole that forces the roots to crowd together. The standard size for a Pixie mandarin planting hole is 60cm wide, 60cm long, and 60cm deep (approximately two feet cubed).

 

When digging, use this clever method:

  1. Separate the Soil: Pile the topsoil (the dark, fertile top 30 cm layer) on one side of the hole. Put the subsoil (the lighter, rocky, or clayey bottom 30 cm layer) on the opposite side.

  2. Amplify the Topsoil: You will only use the fertile topsoil to refill the hole. Discard the poor subsoil or use it to build water-holding basins around the rim later.

Soil Balancing: Correcting pH with Lime

Citrus trees dislike highly acidic soils. If your soil pH is below 5.5, it locks up vital nutrients like phosphorus and calcium, preventing the tree from absorbing them. To fix this, you need to apply agricultural lime (calcium carbonate).

Based on your soil test, you should typically mix about 100 to 200 grams of lime thoroughly with the topsoil removed from each hole. Do this at least two to three weeks before planting. The lime reacts with soil moisture to neutralize acidity, creating an optimal environment for root growth.

Managing Waterlogging with Raised Beds

If your farm is located in a high-rainfall zone or contains heavy clay soil that drains very slowly, planting directly into flat ground is highly risky. To protect your trees from drowning, you should construct raised planting beds or mounds.

To make a raised bed, shovel the surrounding topsoil inward to create a wide, elevated mound that is about 30 to 45 cm high and 1 meter wide. Plant your seedling right at the center of this mound. Additionally, dig clear drainage channels or ditches between the tree rows. When heavy rains hit, excess water will drain away into the ditches instead of pooling around the tree stems, keeping the root crown safe and dry.

Preparing the Ultimate Soil-Manure Mix

To give your seedling a powerful start, create a nutrient-rich soil cocktail for each hole. Thoroughly mix the reserved topsoil with:

  • Two large basins (approx. 15-20 kg) of well-decomposed, dry cattle, goat, or poultry manure. Never use fresh, wet manure, as it generates intense heat as it rots, which will burn and kill the delicate seedling roots.

  • 50 grams of DAP fertilizer or a handful of rock phosphate to promote strong, rapid root development.

Pack this rich mixture back into the hole until it is completely full. It is best to water the refilled hole heavily and let it settle for a couple of weeks before planting your seedling.
