Always align your planting rows running from North to South. Think about the movement of the sun: it rises in the East and sets in the West. When your rows run North to South, the morning sun lights up the entire eastern side of the tree row, and the afternoon sun warms the entire western side. If you incorrectly orient your rows from East to West, the trees will cast permanent shadows on each other all day long, resulting in uneven fruit ripening and lower overall yields.

Establish Your Base Line: Drive a peg (Peg A) at the first corner of your field. Stretch a long string along your boundary line and drive another peg (Peg B) exactly 4 meters away.
Create the Corner: From Peg A, run a second string perpendicular into the field. Measure exactly 3 meters along this string and place a temporary marker (Peg C).
Check the Diagonal: Measure the straight-line distance between Peg B and Peg C. Adjust the position of Peg C until the distance between them is exactly 5 meters. When it hits exactly 5 meters, the angle at Peg A is a perfect 90-degree square corner.
Mark the Grid: Now you can confidently extend your strings across the entire field and use a measured stick (4 meters for within rows, 5 meters between rows) to mark every single hole with ash or a wooden peg.
