Incubation (26-28 Day Cycle)

The 28-Day Marathon: Why it’s Different

A chicken egg takes 21 days; a Guinea Fowl egg takes 26 to 28 days. Those extra seven days are the “danger zone” where many beginners give up or make mistakes.

1. The Thick Shell Challenge

Guinea Fowl eggs are like armor. They are designed to survive being sat on by a heavy bird in a rough, dirt nest.

  • The Humidity Secret: Because the shell is so thick, the keet inside can easily “shrink-wrap” (get stuck to the internal membrane) if the air is too dry. You must maintain higher humidity (around 60-65%) than you would for chickens, increasing it to 75-80% during the final 3 days (The “Hatch”).

  • The Water Spritz Hack: If using a manual incubator or a foster hen in a very dry area (like Wajir or Marsabit), lightly spray the eggs with lukewarm water once a day during the final week to soften the shell.

2. The Foster Mother (The “Kienyeji” Advantage)

If you don’t have an electric incubator, a local “Kienyeji” (Indigenous) chicken is your best employee.

  • The Strategy: When a chicken goes “broody” (stays on the nest and makes a clucking sound), remove her chicken eggs at night and replace them with 12–15 Guinea Fowl eggs.

  • The Benefit: Chickens are “career mothers.” They stay on the nest, keep the eggs turned, and – most importantly – they will protect the keets from the rain and cold much better than a Guinea hen would.


Artificial Incubation: The Technical Specs

If you are scaling to 500+ birds, you need a machine. Here are the Business Settings:

The Lockdown”Rule

The most common cause of “Dead-in-Shell” keets is the farmer’s curiosity. During the last 3 days, the keet is positioning itself to peck through the shell. Every time you open the incubator lid to “check,” the humidity drops instantly, the membrane inside the egg dries out like glue, and the keet is trapped. Keep the lid closed.


Local Case Study: The Foster Success in Homa Bay

A farmer named Achieng had 20 Guinea hens but was only getting 5 keets a month because the hens kept abandoning their nests.

  • The Intervention: Achieng started keeping 5 “reliable” Kienyeji chickens specifically to act as mothers. Every time she collected 15 Guinea Fowl eggs, she gave them to a broody chicken.

  • The Result: The chickens sat for the full 28 days without moving. When the keets hatched, the “Foster Mothers” taught them to stay close and come inside when it rained – habits a Guinea hen rarely teaches.

  • The Profit: Achieng’s hatch rate went from 10% to 85% without buying a single piece of electronic equipment.


Candling: Checking for Life at Day 10

Don’t waste space on “duds” (unfertile eggs). On Day 10, take a bright LED flashlight (or a phone light) into a dark room and hold it against the large end of the egg.

  • Fertile: You will see a dark “spider” (the embryo) with red veins spreading out.

  • Infertile: The egg will be clear and yellow (a “Lightbulb”). Remove these immediately; if they stay in the heat for 28 days, they can explode and contaminate your good eggs with bacteria.


Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • Patience is Key: Some keets are “late bloomers” and might hatch on Day 29 or 30. Don’t throw the eggs away until Day 31.

  • The Peep Test: On Day 26, if you put your ear to the egg (or the incubator), you might hear a faint “cheep-cheep” or a tapping sound. This is the keet taking its first breath of air inside the egg’s air cell.

  • Hygiene: After every hatch, scrub your incubator with a mild disinfectant. The warmth and moisture that hatch keets also grow deadly bacteria like Salmonella.

  • Nutrition for the Mothers: If using foster chickens, ensure they have food and water right next to the nest. They are so dedicated they may starve themselves rather than leave the eggs.
