A baby keet is incredibly top-heavy and frantic. When it gets thirsty, it rushes toward water. If that water is in a standard open chicken saucer, the keet will often get pushed in by its siblings or slip. Because their feathers soak up water like a sponge, they become too heavy to climb out and drown in as little as two inches of water.
If you can afford it, invest in Nipple Drinkers. These are small valves attached to a PVC pipe or a bucket.
How it works: The bird pecks at a small metal pin, and a drop of water falls directly into its mouth.
The Benefit: No open water means zero drowning. It also means no poop or dust can get into the water, keeping it 100% sterile.
If you must use open troughs for young keets, you must “fill the gap.”
The Method: Fill the water tray with clean, round stones or marbles.
The Result: The keets drink from the spaces between the stones but cannot fit their bodies into the water.
In dry climates like Machakos or Garissa, water in a plastic pipe or trough can reach 40°C by 2:00 PM. Guinea Fowl hate warm water. If the water is hot, they will stop drinking, which leads to “Internal Heat Stress,” causing them to stop eating and eventually die.
Take a lesson from traditional African households. Use un-glazed clay pots (Nyungu) as your water reservoirs.
The Physics: Clay is porous. A tiny bit of water seeps through the walls and evaporates, which naturally chills the water inside by 5–10 degrees.
The Setup: Place the clay pot in a shaded corner and connect it to your drinkers, or let the adults drink directly from a shallow clay bowl.
Never place a waterer in the middle of an open field.
The Umbrella Effect: Build a small “A-frame” shelter using scrap timber and grass thatch over every water station. This keeps the sun off the water and provides a cool place for the birds to rest while they hydrate.

A farmer named Ali on the Kenyan Coast kept his Guinea Fowl water in clear plastic 20-liter jerrycans. Because the sun was so bright, green “slime” (algae) grew inside the containers within two days.
The Crisis: His birds developed “Sour Crop” and respiratory issues from drinking the bacteria-laden water.
The Fix: Ali painted his jerrycans black to block the sunlight (algae needs light to grow) and moved them under a thick Neem tree. He also added one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to every 5 liters of water.
The Result: The vinegar acted as a natural mild antibiotic, and the black paint stopped the algae growth. His birds became more active and their digestion improved immediately.
Cleanliness is a daily task, not a weekly one.
The Morning Scrub: Every morning, use a stiff brush to scrub the “slime” (Biofilm) off the bottom of the waterers.
The Bleach Soak: Once a week, soak all your plastic drinkers in a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water for 30 minutes to kill any hidden viruses.
The Finger Test: If you wouldn’t put your own finger in the water and lick it, it is too dirty for your birds.
Water Consumption Increases with Age: A 10-week-old bird drinks nearly triple what a 2-week-old bird drinks. Always ensure you have “surplus” water capacity.
The Night Drink: Even though they sleep on high roosts, Guinea Fowls often get thirsty at dawn. Ensure there is water available the moment they jump down from their perches.
Avoid Metal in the Sun: Never use metal troughs in direct sunlight; they can become hot enough to burn the birds’ sensitive tongues and wattles.
Medication Safety: When giving vaccines or dewormers in water (Step 3.3), ensure the water is cool and fresh. Heat can “kill” the vaccine before the bird even drinks it.
