To understand why you cannot just “wing it” with feed, look at the biological requirements of these birds side-by-side.
Standard Chick Starter: Usually contains 18% to 20% protein. This is designed for a bird that will spend its life in a protected coop.
Guinea Keet Requirement: Needs 24% to 28% protein. This high level is required for “feathering out.” Because keets need to fly early to survive predators, their bodies prioritize feather and wing muscle growth over fat.
What happens if the protein is too low?
Stunted Growth: They will look like “permanent babies” for months.
Wing-Droop: Their wings will hang low because they don’t have the muscle to hold them up.
Cannibalism: If they don’t get enough protein from their food, they will start pecking at each other’s toes and feathers to get it.
In many parts of Kenya and Africa, specific “Guinea Fowl Starter” does not exist in the local agrovet. You must be a Solution-Oriented Agripreneur.
If you can find Turkey Starter, buy it. Turkeys and Guinea Fowls are cousins in the “Game Bird” family and have almost identical protein requirements. Turkey Starter usually sits at the 26% protein mark, making it perfect for keets.
If only standard Chick Starter (20% protein) is available, you must “fortify” it.
The Recipe: Take 5kg of Chick Starter. Add 1kg of finely ground Omena (ensure it is dried and unsalted).
The Result: This raises the overall protein percentage and adds essential Omega fatty acids that make their feathers shine and their bones strong.
Warning: Do not use salted Omena, as salt is toxic to young keets in high amounts.
Keets have tiny beaks. If the feed is too “powdery,” they can’t pick it up easily and might inhale the dust, leading to respiratory issues. If it’s too big (pellets), they can’t swallow it.
Action: For the first 2 weeks, ensure the feed is a “Fine Crumble” – the size of coarse sand or small grains of sugar.

The Intervention: Otieno began sun-drying waste fish parts (heads and tails) from the local market, grinding them into a fine dust, and mixing it 1:4 with his mash.

The Saving: By using local fish waste, he actually spent less money than he did on the “pure” commercial mash while getting better results.
Protein-rich feed spoils quickly in the African heat, especially if it gets damp.
Dry Storage: Keep your feed bags on wooden pallets, not on the cement floor. Cement “breathes” moisture, which can cause mold (Aflatoxin), which is a silent killer of Guinea Fowl.
Small Portions: Feed them 3 to 4 times a day in small amounts rather than filling a large trough once. This ensures the feed is always fresh and prevents “pitting” (where they poop in the food).
Water First: Always ensure keets have had a drink of water (with electrolytes) before they eat their first meal. If they eat dry mash while dehydrated, it can “clog” their crop.
The Greens Introduction: At Week 3, start hanging small bunches of kale (Sukuma Wiki) or lucerne just above their heads. This teaches them to peck for “living food” and provides vitamins.
Avoid Filler Grains Early: Do not feed young keets pure maize or bran. These are high in energy but very low in protein. It’s like feeding a growing child only bread and no milk or eggs.
Watch the Poop: Healthy keet droppings should be firm with a white “cap.” If it is watery or yellow, check your feed quality or protein levels immediately.
