You must cut large windows into the lids of your plastic bins.
The Material: Use fine-mesh stainless steel or high-quality nylon mosquito netting.
The Seal: Use a hot-glue gun or “silicone” to attach the mesh to the plastic. There must be zero gaps. A “pinhead” cricket can fit through a hole the size of a matchstick head.
The Double Mesh (Optional): In areas with heavy fly populations, some farmers use a double layer of mesh to prevent “Phorid flies” from entering and laying eggs in the cricket waste.
Even with a lid, you want to prevent crickets from climbing the walls.
Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline): Apply a 5cm wide strip of Vaseline or unscented petroleum jelly around the inside top rim of the bin. Crickets cannot get a grip on this “greasy” surface and will slide back down.
Clear Packing Tape: For wooden or rough plastic bins, a strip of very smooth, wide packing tape can work. However, over time, dust makes the tape “climbable,” so Vaseline is generally better.
Crickets breathe through small holes in their sides called spiracles. If the air in the bin is “stagnant” (not moving), carbon dioxide and ammonia (from their droppings) build up.
Signs of Poor Venting: Condensation (water droplets) on the inside walls of the bin. If you see this, your crickets are at risk of respiratory failure.
| Design Type | Airflow Quality | Escape Risk | Cost |
| Small Drill Holes | Poor | Low | Free |
| Full Mesh Lid | Excellent | Moderate (needs good glue) | Low |
| Side Vents + Top Mesh | Superior | Low | Medium |
An urban farmer in Nairobi’s Pipeline estate didn’t secure his lids properly. One night, a bin tipped over, and thousands of adult crickets escaped into the apartment block. The “chirping” was so loud that the neighbors called the caretaker, and the farmer was almost evicted. He solved the problem by switching to “Clip-Lock” lids and applying a thick layer of Vaseline to every bin. He learned that escape-proofing isn’t just for the crickets – it’s for your reputation as a professional businessperson.
Check Your Mesh Daily: Small rodents (mice) can sometimes chew through nylon mesh to get to the crickets. If you see a hole, patch it immediately.
The Vaseline Line Maintenance: Once a month, wipe away the old, dusty Vaseline and apply a fresh, slick coat.
Predators Work Both Ways: The mesh doesn’t just keep crickets in; it keeps “House Flies” out. Flies in your cricket bins lead to maggots and disease.
