Calculating Your Own Low-Cost Rations

The Three Pillars of a Pig’s Plate

To mix a ration that actually works, you must think of a pig’s meal in three parts. If any part is missing, the pig stops growing.

  1. The Base (Energy – 70%): This is the bulk of the meal. Locally, this is usually Maize Bran, Wheat Pollard, or Rice Bran. It keeps the pig moving and staying warm.

  2. The Builder (Protein – 25%): This is what makes muscle (meat). You get this from Omena, Soya Bean Meal, or Sunflower Cake. Without this, you get a fat pig with no meat.

  3. The Boosters (Minerals & Vitamins – 5%): These are the “secret ingredients.” You buy these as “Pig Premix” from the agrovet. They ensure strong bones and prevent the pig from getting paralyzed or weak.

The Bucket Method Recipes

You don’t need a scale for every mix. Use a standard 20-liter plastic bucket as your measuring unit. Note: For the Boosters, use a standard 200ml plastic cup (like a tea cup).

The Fast-Start Recipe (Starter Feed: 10kg – 25kg Pigs)

  • 4 Buckets of Maize Bran (Energy)

  • 1.5 Buckets of Crushed Omena or Toasted Soya (High Protein)

  • 1 Cup of Pig Premix

  • 1/2 Cup of Lime (Calcium for bones)

  • A pinch of Salt

The Heavy-Grower Recipe (Grower/Finisher: 25kg – Market)

  • 6 Buckets of Maize Bran

  • 1 Bucket of Omena or Sunflower Cake

  • 1 Cup of Pig Premix

  • 1/2 Cup of Salt

The Agripreneur’s Mixing Cheat Sheet

Ingredient Why We Use It Best Source in Kenya/Africa
Carbohydrates Energy & Weight: The “fuel” that keeps the pig active and puts on the bulk of the weight. Maize Bran, Wheat Pollard, Cassava Flour, Sorghum, or Barley.
Protein Meat & Growth: Essential for building muscle (lean meat) rather than just fat. Omena (Fish), Soya Bean Meal (toasted), Sunflower Cake, or Cottonseed Cake.
Minerals Bone Strength: Prevents “downer” sows and ensures piglets develop strong frames to carry heavy weight. Feed Lime, Bone Meal, or specialized Commercial Pig Premix.
Fiber Digestion: Keeps the gut moving; especially important for pregnant sows to prevent constipation. Wheat Bran, Lucerne (Alfalfa) Hay, or fresh Sweet Potato Vines.

Pro-Tip for the Agripreneur: When mixing, remember that Omena is the king of proteins in East Africa, but it must be dried properly. If it feels “damp,” it can introduce mold into your mix. Always store your finished “Magic Ration” in a dry area on wooden pallets to keep it away from floor moisture.

How to Mix by Hand (The Mountain Technique)

Mixing is the most important part. If you don’t mix well, one pig gets all the salt (and dies) and another gets no protein (and doesn’t grow).

  1. The Floor: Find a clean, dry concrete floor.

  2. The Big Pile: Pour your energy base (Maize Bran) into a big mountain.

  3. The Small Pile: Pour your protein and minerals on top of the mountain.

  4. The Turn over: Use a shovel to move the whole mountain one meter to the left, then one meter to the right. Repeat this 3 times until the color is exactly the same throughout.

  5. Storage: Store the mix in a dry place on top of wooden “pallets” (not directly on the cold floor) to prevent mold.

The Salt Warning

Pigs are very sensitive to salt. If you add too much, or if it isn’t mixed well, it can cause Salt Poisoning. Always ensure that if you are using salty ingredients like “salty omena,” you reduce the extra salt you add to the mix.

Case Study: The Home-Made Victory in Busia

Farmer Otieno was spending 40,000 KES a month on commercial feeds for his 20 growers. He was barely breaking even. He decided to buy maize bran directly from a local miller and omena from the lake-shore. He started using the Bucket Method. His monthly cost dropped to 22,000 KES. Even though he spent 2 hours every Saturday mixing the feed with his brother, he saved 18,000 KES a month – money he used to buy 5 more piglets. He proved that “Labor is cheaper than a Feed Factory’s profit margin.”

The Cheat Code: Adding Lysine and Methionine

If you want your pigs to grow like “rockets,” go to the agrovet and ask for Lysine and Methionine powders. These are “Essential Amino Acids.” Adding just two tablespoons to your bucket mix tells the pig’s body to turn almost all the food into muscle. It is the secret used by large-scale commercial farms.

Important things to keep in mind:

  • Dust is the Enemy: If your maize bran is too dusty, it can cause pigs to cough. Lightly dampen the feed with a little water or “Pig Tea”  just before serving.

  • Mold is Poison: Never mix feed with wet ingredients and store it. It will rot. Only mix dry ingredients for storage.

  • The Taste Test: If you change your recipe, the pigs might “complain” by eating slowly for a day. Stick with it; they will adjust.
