Snails do not lay eggs on the surface. They are “architects of the earth.” They use their foot to dig a hole about 2 to 5 centimeters deep into the treated soil and deposit their eggs in a cluster.
How do you know there are eggs in your pen without digging up the whole farm?
The Stake-out Behavior: If you see a snail stayed in the same spot, half-buried for more than 12 hours, she is likely laying.
The Hole Evidence: Look for small, neatly turned-over mounds of soil that look different from the rest of the floor.
The Weight Drop: A snail that was very heavy and “bulky” near the shell opening suddenly looks “thin” or retracted after a night of burrowing.
Once a week, you must do an “Egg Search.”
The Gentle Touch: Use a small plastic spoon or your fingers to gently probe the soil in the corners and under the vegetation.
Appearance: Snail eggs look like tiny, yellow or creamy-white “marbles” or “Tic-Tacs.” They are surprisingly firm but can be crushed if handled roughly.
The Transfer: Use a spoon to lift the entire cluster at once. Do not leave them in the sun while you work; keep them in a damp container.
You should never incubate eggs in the same box as adults. You need a dedicated Incubation Box – a smaller plastic or wooden container with very fine mesh.
The Substrate: Fill the box with 5cm of the same treated loamy soil, but ensure it is filtered through a fine sieve to remove any large clumps.
The Bed: Make a small depression in the soil with your thumb. Place the egg cluster inside.
The Blanket: Cover the eggs with a very thin layer of soil (no more than 1cm).
The Moisture Lock: Lightly mist the soil. It should be damp but never “muddy.” Cover the soil with a damp cotton cloth or a large, clean cocoyam leaf to keep the humidity at 90-95%.
The Darkness: Snails hatch best in total darkness. Keep the incubation box in a dark corner of your store or under a shelf.

A farmer in Eldoret thought it was “more natural” to leave the eggs in the main trench with the adults. For the first month, she saw many eggs, but she never saw any baby snails. When she finally dug up the soil, she found hundreds of crushed shells. The heavy adult snails, weighing up to 500g each, were crawling over the nesting sites and breaking the eggs before they could hatch. She switched to the Incubation Box method, moving eggs every Saturday morning. Within three weeks, she had her first “explosion” of 400 hatchlings, proving that protection equals production.

Important things to keep in mind:
Don’t Help them hatch: Just like chicks, baby snails need to break out on their own. Peeling the egg for them usually kills the hatchling.
The First Meal: Do not put fresh food in the incubation box the moment they hatch. The baby snails must eat their eggshells first – this is their “Colostrum” (first milk) which hardens their tiny shells.
Count your Capital: Keep a small notebook. Record how many eggs you collected and the date. This helps you predict your “Harvest Volume” 8 months into the future.
