Think of a snail like a cold-blooded athlete. They perform best when the environment is “just right.” If it’s too hot, they dry out (dehydrate). If it’s too cold (below 15°C), their metabolism slows down, and they stop feeding.
Humidity is simply the amount of water vapor in the air. Snails need high humidity to move. They produce mucus (slime) to glide, and if the air is dry, they cannot produce enough slime.
The Sign of Trouble: If you see your snails huddled together in a corner or buried deep in the soil during the night (when they should be active), your humidity is too low.
The Solution: You must mist your pens every evening and early morning. Use a fine spray – you want a “fog,” not a flood.
Direct sunlight is the number 1 killer of snails. Your snailery should always be in a shaded area.
The Banana Shield: In Africa, we use nature. Planting bananas or broad-leafed plants like cocoyams around and even inside larger pens provides a natural canopy that keeps the ground cool even when the sun is scorching.
The Soil Temperature: Snails spend their day buried in the soil. If the soil is hot to the touch, your snails are being “slow-cooked.” A thick layer of mulch (dry grass or maize stalks) on top of the soil acts as an insulator.
You don’t need expensive air conditioning to manage your snailery’s climate. Here are three localized methods used by successful agripreneurs:
If you are using wooden boxes, place a damp sisal sack (gunny bag) over the wire mesh lid. As the wind blows, the water evaporates from the sack, cooling the air inside the box. It’s a natural “evaporative cooler.”
In very hot areas like the Kenyan Coast or Northern Nigeria, many farmers prefer Trench Pens dug into the ground. Because the earth is naturally cooler than the air, these pits maintain a steady temperature. A trench 50cm deep can stay 5°C cooler than the surface.
Snails are nocturnal. To maximize growth, you must ensure the environment is dampest between 8:00 PM and 4:00 AM. If you spray your pens at 6:00 PM, the snails will “wake up” to a moist environment and feed aggressively all night. If the pen is dry at night, they stay in their shells and you lose a day of growth.

A farmer in Limuru (a cold, high-altitude area of Kenya) struggled because his snails wouldn’t eat. The temperature was often 14°C. He solved this by lining the inside of his wooden pens with heavy polythene to trap the heat and using warm (not hot) water for his evening misting.
Conversely, a farmer in Voi (a hot, dry area) lost his entire stock to dehydration. He rebuilt his snailery under a massive mango tree and installed a “drip system” using a plastic jerrycan with a tiny pinhole that kept a corner of the soil perpetually damp. Within a month, his snails were active again. Both farmers succeeded by adjusting to their local micro-climate.
If you cannot afford a digital thermometer or hygrometer (which costs about KES 1,500), use the “Hand Test”:
Soil Moisture: Dig your fingers 2 inches into the soil. It should feel cool and damp like a wrung-out sponge. If it’s muddy, it’s too wet. If it’s dusty, it’s too dry.
Air Feel: When you open the lid of the pen, you should feel a “puff” of cool, moist air hit your face. If it feels the same as the air outside, you need more misting or better shading.
Important things to keep in mind:
Consistency is everything: Snails hate “yo-yo” weather. A sudden dry spell of 3 days can set back 2 weeks of growth.
The Dormancy Cost: Every day your snail is “sealed” in its shell is a day you are paying for space and time without any weight gain.
Watch the Wind: Strong, dry winds (like the Harmattan in West Africa or the Kaskazi in East Africa) can dry out a snailery in minutes. Ensure your mesh is protected by shade cloth or sacks.
