Water Infrastructure: Pools vs. Drinkers

The Reality Check: Do They Need to Swim?

In a commercial setup, water is a tool for health and digestion, not just recreation.

1. For Meat (Pekins) and Eggs (Khaki Campbells):

You do not need a swimming pool. In fact, many large-scale commercial duck farms in Europe and Asia keep birds entirely on “dry” land with specialized drinkers.

  • The Downside of Pools: Ducks defecate in the water while swimming. If that water isn’t filtered or changed daily (which is expensive and labor-intensive), the birds will drink that dirty water, leading to internal parasites and infections.

  • The Cleanliness Factor: For Pekins, swimming in muddy ponds stains their white feathers. When you go to slaughter, a stained bird is harder to clean and less “premium” in the eyes of a hotel chef.

2. For Breeding (Fertile Eggs):

If your goal is to produce fertile eggs for hatching, a small pool or “wading area” is highly recommended.

  • Mating Mechanics: Heavy breeds like Muscovies or large Pekins find it much easier to mate in the water. The buoyancy of the water supports the weight of the drake (male), leading to higher fertility rates. Without water, your “hatchability” might drop by 10–20%.

Designing the Deep-Access Drinker

Since we’ve established that “head immersion” is the priority, you need a drinker that is deep but narrow.

The Gallon-Jug Hack: Take a 5-liter or 20-liter plastic jerrycan. Cut circular holes in the sides, about 3 inches in diameter, halfway up the container.

  • How it works: The duck can stick its entire head into the hole to drink and wash its eyes, but it cannot fit its body inside to swim or poop. This keeps the water clean for much longer.

Managing Splash-Over with the Soakaway

Regardless of the system you choose, ducks will splash. To keep your housing dry, your waterers should be placed on a Water Station.

  1. The Grid: Place your drinkers on a raised platform made of wire mesh or wooden slats.

  2. The Catchment: Underneath the platform, have a concrete sloped floor or a plastic tray that catches the splashed water and pipes it outside the house.

  3. The Distance: Keep the water station at least 5 feet away from the feeding troughs. This forces the duck to swallow its food before it gets to the water, which prevents them from dropping half their feed into the water bucket.

Localized Case Study: The Concrete Basin in Naivasha

A farmer in Naivasha built a large concrete pond for his 100 ducks, thinking it was the “natural” way. Within a month, the pond was black, smelly, and his ducks were getting diarrhea.

  • The Pivot: He drained the pond and filled it with stones. On top of the stones, he placed four 20-liter “hole-punched” jerrycans.

  • The Result: His water bill dropped by 60%. Because the ducks were no longer drinking “poop-water,” their growth rate improved, and they reached market weight a week earlier than the previous batch. He now only uses a small, portable plastic “kiddie pool” for his small group of breeding birds.


Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • The Two-Drinker Rule: Always have at least two water sources in different parts of the pen. Dominant ducks (bullies) will sometimes “guard” a single waterer, preventing smaller birds from drinking.

  • Cleaning Schedule: Even with clean drinkers, ducks will get feed in the water. These containers must be scrubbed with a simple brush every morning to prevent algae and slime buildup.

  • Water Temperature: In very hot African climates, try to keep the waterers in the shade. Ducks will not drink warm/hot water, and if they stop drinking, they stop eating.
